We all have “those people” in our lives. The people we struggle to understand. The people we are certain are wrong. The people whose presence makes us uncomfortable, and whose receiving grace may make us even more uncomfortable. In the story of Jonah, God shows compassion toward the people Jonah can't stand. In Jesus’ parable of the vineyard workers, everyone receives what they need, and those who arrived first are quite furious about it. Apparently, expansive grace sounds wonderful until God extends it to someone we believe doesn't deserve it. This Sunday, we will confront one of faith’s most uncomfortable questions: What happens when God’s mercy is wider than ours? A third chair will join our sanctuary installation… the chair brought out when another person arrives, when the guest list grows, and when we realize that making room requires more than simply saying, “All are welcome.” Because sometimes we call them “those people.” And sometimes, to someone else, we are those people.
