Some people seem to know all the right things to say. They know when to say “Amen.” They know how to sound faithful, respectable, and certain. They know how to say what they think others wish to hear. Jesus tells a story in which the person who initially says “no” is the one who ultimately shows up, and the one who says “yes,” doesn’t. We don’t prove how faithful we are by sounding holy. It’s shown in what we do next. This Sunday, we will consider the unexpected saints among us… people whose lives may not look polished, whose stories may carry scars, and whose language may not sound particularly religious, yet they are living with courage, compassion, honesty, and grace. A fourth chair will join our sanctuary installation. And despite what it looks like, it still has a place. Its history does not disqualify it from belonging. Neither does yours. Holiness may look less like perfection and more like changing direction, repairing harm, telling the truth, and showing up when it matters. You do not need a polished life to sit with us.
