What if the person we dismissed is the person God is using? What if the truth we rejected is the truth that could rebuild us? What if something, or someone didn’t fit our expectations, so we failed to recognize what God was doing? Jesus speaks about a stone rejected by the builders that becomes the cornerstone. It is a warning about what happens when religious communities become so invested in protecting what they have built that they can no longer recognize the movement of God. This Sunday, we will ask who has been overlooked, dismissed, silenced, or treated as though they did not belong. We will also ask what gifts the church has lost by demanding that everyone match before they are welcomed. A new chair will join our sanctuary installation. It may not match the others. It may not be what anyone expected. Yet its difference is not a problem to solve, it is part of what makes the gathering whole. God has always worked through unexpected people.
